Foot Tenderness

Condition:

Often, as the body ages, the layer of padding on the bottom of the foot can become less resilient to resisting compression, thin and allow greater sensitivity to pressure, change in terrain and uneven surfaces. Additionally, neuropathies can develop from different causative factors resulting in hypo/hypersensitivity whether from diabetes to arterial disease; this condition can greatly impact mobility.

Treatment:

Most commonly, treatment consists of advisement to reduce time on feet, not go barefoot and to avoid thin soled shoes. However, physical therapy to improve muscle support, evaluation for appropriate orthotic or footwear and education on avoiding heightened pressure with ADLs is the most successful course for dealing with this malady.
